Bad hair years

I got a lot of warnings from mom friends before I had kids, some of which have come true. They said: 1.) your car will be a mess – not true  2.) you won’t have time to paint your nails – true for the first year of Avery’s life, but I’ve found time again  3.) you won’t have […]

Preschool shopping

I took Clay shopping for preschool and soccer clothes and supplies on Saturday. They both start in late August, but the next few weeks are crazy (and I had coupons this weekend), so we got an early start. It was a great day! Even for me, who usually prefers online shopping. Quality time with my favorite boy!

What’s in your purse?

Before I had kids, my mom friends would eye my small purse saying, “when you have kids, you’ll buy a huge purse.” I just smiled and wondered if they were right. When I was a kid, my mom had a purse the size of a small child. She’d put it in the front seat of our car, and it took up […]

Easy fixes

We’ve lived in our house for almost two years, and I finally feel like it’s starting to come together. This is the first time I’ve owned a home, and before we moved in I’d done very little decorating and no DIY renovation. Without a permanent home, it wasn’t worth my time or money. My dad, however, did plenty of work […]

Two monkeys

For some reason Avery took her stuffed turtle and blanket to school yesterday. Then we forgot to bring them home, so despite our efforts to convince her this sock monkey was just as good as turtle, she wasn’t having it. She appeared in our room around 4:00 a.m. and didn’t go back to sleep until after […]

Coffee cake thief

Clay loves Starbucks berry coffee cake, so even though he had his own he thought it would be funny to steal a piece of his sister’s. Poor Avery loves food and her brother so much, it really hurt her feelings.

“Having it all”

There has been a lot of discussion in the media and social circles lately about Anne-Marie Slaughter’s piece in The Atlantic magazine, examining why “women still can’t have it all.” Slaughter is a Princeton professor, who took a high-ranking government job for two years, then resigned after realizing it wasn’t working for her family. To add to the working mom […]

Model or circus performer?

I remember girls trying to balance things on their heads saying that’s how models learn to walk the runway. So maybe Avery has a future in modeling? She is pretty cute, but with her personality maybe the circus is more likely. Balance is important there too, and she’s quite the character!

“Put first things first”

For years, I’ve been meaning to read Stephen Covey’s “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.” When Mr. Covey passed away this week, I found a slide show on washingtonpost.com illustrating his principles. While I think they are all words to live by, #3 “Put first things first” was the most relevant to me as a […]

Laundry is fun!

The kids wanted to help wash their blankets. I went to work out and Avery came with me. While we were gone, Clay put the laundry into the dryer and turned it on, without any help (Chase was in the bathroom). He asked this morning if we get to do more laundry today. If I […]
