Friday Five: Save time and money – and get organized!

The “Friday Five” series shows five things that could help save you time or money – or help you get more organized.

PBS Kids, Disney Junior1. PBS Kids and Disney Junior online games
For the next three weeks, Clay will be in and out of camp until school starts. I am still working, so I need to keep him busy. We have been “working” together. He plays games on Disney Junior and KPBS kids on the PC, while I work on my Mac. All the games help him learn and he has fun, too. And they’re free!

workbook2. Target $1 bin workbooks
See above. Clay will be home, but eventually he has to get tired of the computer, right? Or maybe not…Anyway, I picked up this workbook in the Target $1 bin. It looks similar to the Kumon ones I paid $7 for, and the price is right. I also grabbed a pack of  flash cards for Avery. Learning tools for $2!

MacBook Air3. MacBook Air
I realize this is not a money-saving tip, as my computer cost $1,200. But, time is money, and I can’t tell you how much time this laptop saves me. My Dell laptop (which has become Clay’s) takes several minutes just to turn on. I can leave the Mac on the counter, and it takes about three seconds to be up and running again. For someone who is on and off the computer a lot throughout the day, it is a lifesaver. It’s also thin and light, so it’s easy to take to meetings or to work outside of the home. And the battery lasts an entire workday. I don’t know what I did without it!

Bona floor mop4. Bona floor mop
You may have noticed I’ve been fighting a battle with my floors since I started cleaning them myself. I don’t know what my house cleaner did, but they always looked so shiny when she cleaned them. Anyway, I’ve written before about the Method floor cleaner I liked, but the mop I was using took forever to clean my downstairs (which is not big). I heard about the Bona mop on Young House Love, so I decided to try it. It was $19.99 at Bed, Bath & Beyond, but of course I used one of their famous coupons for 20 percent off. In addition to the microfiber cloth, it comes with a dusting pad – very useful. The thing I like most is the size – I’m able to cover a lot of surface area in not much time since it’s so large. The Bona spray cleaner is pretty good/easy too. For those of you who don’t have wood floors, they have options for tile and other surfaces. Either way, the mop is great!

5. Fresh & Easy fish Fresh & Easy fishmeals
I’ve written about Fresh & Easy before. I love the coupons they send me, and I’m also a member of their loyalty program, so I’m always getting discounts after a certain number of purchases. Chase is picky and I’m indecisive, so I don’t buy a lot of prepared meals. The Fresh & Easy parmesan-crusted fish, with their quinoa and brown rice, is the exception. It’s delicious and costs less than $10 for the whole meal. The fish takes eight minutes to cook and the rice/quinoa combo takes 90 seconds in the microwave. You may notice that I eat two pieces. I also ate frozen yogurt that night. So, I’ll never be like the celebrities who can survive on just one piece of fish and a veggie for dinner, but this is one of our favorite easy, healthy meals.

Hope you have a great weekend! We’ve had enough computer time, I think we need to head off to the beach!
