My Good Napper

Clay's nap today!

Clay’s nap today!

Clay is two days away from starting kindergarten, and he’s down for a nap right now. I have no idea how I got so lucky. Like I’ve written before, no child is perfect, but Clay is pretty darn close when it comes to napping. Don’t get me wrong, he had some times when he was younger that he would fight his nap, but we held strong. Every kid is different, but I knew he needed to rest. Most days he slept, some days he didn’t, but I kept him in his room for quiet time either way. It was as much for me as it was for him. Time for him to recharge his batteries and time for me to get stuff done.

When he turned four, we’d let him skip his nap one day a week (usually Saturdays), and I’ve been telling him that he could stop napping all together when he turned five. At camp this summer he didn’t nap, but when he’s home he still naps most days. He’s reached an age that he knows when he is tired and recognizes the benefits of a nap. It’s like all those years of us telling him how lucky he is that he gets to take a nap finally sunk in.

Avery isn’t there yet. She still naps, but every couple weeks she fights it and just plays in her room instead. She’s a different kid than Clay, so I’m not sure if I’ll get lucky again, and she’ll nap until she’s five. But, a girl can dream, can’t she?
