Time management: use note cards!

All parents are busy, and time management does not come naturally to most people. As my kids have gotten older, I’ve realized how important it is to find time for your work, your kids, your spouse and yourself. But, how do you find it? And more importantly, how do you make sure everything you need to do gets done?

I started this blog to help people save time and money, and I love it when I get a great idea from a friend that could help other parents. I was at a girls’ weekend, and we were talking about the (delicate) balance between work and home life. Between the five of us, we have 10 kids, ranging in age from 15 months to 11-years-old.

One of my good friends, who also happens to have the oldest children out of our group, gave us a great (and simple) idea: note cards! Yes, I know there are many fancy iPhone apps for time management, but something as simple as a note card can work just as well.

First, write down everything you have to do in a day: preparing meals, shower, laundry, work, playtime, exercise, shopping, etc. It all takes time, and the list is long. Then put time blocks onto your note card for all your waking hours and assign blocks of time to each activity.

Your note cards will likely change as your work and home life change, then again when your kids get older. They stop napping and instead you swap in school and sports and summer camps. Unfortunately, the errands and other household tasks won’t go away, but older kids can start to help. They could have their own note cards too.

I really think if you plan your day and try to stick to a routine, it helps you and your kids. Everyone knows what’s coming next, and it’s less likely something will be overlooked. So, try out the note cards and let me know how it works for you!
